National Truckers Day 2026: What It Is, When It Is, and Why It Matters
National Truckers Day honors the men and women who haul America’s freight. In 2026, it lands on Sunday, October 4.
It is also called National Truckers Appreciation Day and 10-4 Day. The nickname comes from the date, 10/4, which matches the CB radio ten-code for “message received.”
Ten-codes are older than most people think. Charles Hopper of the Illinois State Police created them in the late 1930s, and they were first built for police radio. Truckers later adopted them on channel 19, and the 10-4 stuck.
The facts show why the day matters. The American Trucking Associations (ATA) reports about 3.6 million professional truck drivers in the U.S. More than 80% of American communities rely only on trucks for their freight.
Drivers cover about 500 miles on an average day. Many spend days or weeks away from home.
Sources vary on the day’s origin. One calendar source credits Bill Stearnes with establishing it in 2020.
Do not mix it up with National Truck Driver Appreciation Week (NTDAW). The ATA started that week in 1988, and it runs September 13-19 in 2026. You can also see how FMCSA marks the week.
